The Road To Digital Transformation: Who Are You And What Do You Have?

By November 26, 2019 blog No Comments

Digital transformation requires a knowledge of your industry, clarity around your company goals, knowing what your customers really want and understanding what digital assets, if any, you have to work with. But, just as it is in life, you have to start the journey with a solid footing.

A company has an important question to ask itself: “Who are we?” Before setting off on the journey of digital transformation, it’s time well spent to dig deep into this seemingly simple question to find answers — and have agreement and unity companywide so that all can be aligned toward the goal of transformation.

Who are you?

If you can’t answer this question, first of all, don’t worry. Many companies can’t quickly answer this. But, you also aren’t ready to move fast; you may jump too quickly or skip something important.

To begin, it’s important to ask yourself and others in your company questions to lock in on simple, digestible answers to the question of “Who are we?” It is these answers that your digital transformation should support, amplify and take to a new, stratospheric level.

Make a list of questions that you can work on and pass to others as well. The more simple the query, the better. Questions such as “What are our goals?” and “Who are our customers?” are a good place to start. Also, take note of your company and “brand feel and image” — and represent it in simple, clear language.

There are many ways to answer these questions. It could be through anonymous surveys, in small focus groups or through a third-party interviewer. Once these answers and statements are set, create a one-page master document for your entire team to read, review and, most importantly, support and adhere to during the coming transformation, as this can help inform all decisions you make from there forward.

Know where you stand.

After this exercise has been completed, it’s time to take inventory of what you are working with. Do a deep technology review. You may find you have something to work with and build on, such as a mobile app or a modern website. Or you may avoid the catastrophe of leaning on a past product offering that just wasn’t made to last.

You might have a mobile app, or an inkling of a product or capability, that could be the seed for digital growth, but if you used an outside agency and no longer have reliable resources to work on it, it could mean trouble. This is where a tech assessment can help.

Having a tech assessment or a code review done can be compared to having an independent car mechanic go over a vehicle before you take a cross-country journey in it. Just because the car is clean and has just been waxed does not mean it is ready to go. Was it built correctly? Has it been properly maintained? Are there any issues that could lead to a breakdown or a crash? It’s critical that you don’t just assume it’s ready to go, as is.

To begin your digital transformation, know who you are and who your customers are (and what problems they want you to solve for them), and get a good understanding of the technology you already have. With this in hand, you’ll be better equipped to handle the road ahead.
