Unless it’s blocked beforehand by IT pros, the Teams workspace collaboration application will arrive for those subscribers. The “semiannual channel” refers to Microsoft biannual update model, where feature updates typically arrive in the spring and fall. Teams will get delivered to organizations using version 1908 or later of Office 365 ProPlus, Microsoft explained, so the version of the product matters.

Organizations using Office 365 ProPlus or Office 365 Business also have an option to follow a monthly feature update model. Those subscribers already may have received Teams months ago, as Microsoft had kicked off Teams for subscribers using version 1906 of those productivity-suite products back on July 9.

Microsoft’s original plans to deliver Teams to Office 365 ProPlus and Office 365 Business subscribers were described back in June. At that time, Microsoft had explained that it was delivering Teams to Office 365 Business users even though they don’t have the use rights for Teams. The version of Teams that Office 365 Business users get is a free one-year trial version, which is called the “Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial.” Teams gets delivered to Office 365 Business users even if they did not request getting the trial.

Blocking the arrival of Teams for these Office 365 products requires using Group Policy settings or the Office Deployment Tool, as described in this Microsoft document.

After Teams arrives, it’ll start getting feature and quality updates, which will arrive “approximately every two weeks,” the document explained. The Teams update process is different from the update process of other Office apps such as Excel or Word, it added.

The company announced this week that extended support for Office 2010 will end on October 13, 2020. And as with Windows 7, which also reaches end of life in January 2020, that means no more tech support, bug fixes or security patches.

Customers do have the option of upgrading to the on-premise Office 2019 for a one-time purchase, but Microsoft really wants enterprise customers to move to Office 365 ProPlus per-user subscription.

The key difference Microsoft highlights in its Office 2010 roadmap between the two newer products is that Office 365 ProPlus is updated regularly with new features, while Office 2019 has the same features it had when it was released in October 2018.

Office 365 ProPlus, which comes with most enterprise plans, includes the “full versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business installed on your client computers”. It also allows people to install Office on up to five devices, be they PCs, Macs, or mobile devices.

“Consider just a few benefits: AI and machine learning to advance creativity and innovation, real-time collaboration across apps, and Microsoft Teams as the hub for teamwork,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president for Microsoft 365.

“With built-in, cloud-powered security to protect your data, Office 365 ProPlus also provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing your business will not only be productive, but safe.”

Some of the main features Microsoft has added to Office 365 since releasing Office 2010 include Excel’s XLOOKUP, the successor to the VLOOKUP formula; Excel real-time collaboration across PCs, laptops and mobile; Word’s Resume assistant; dictation in Word and the upcoming ability to upload audio files for automatic transcription.

There’s also an AI-powered feature in PowerPoint that offers suggested slide designs and PowerPoint inking, voice and 3D capabilities.

Microsoft last month announced it was extending security updates for Exchange Server 2010 from January 14, 2020 – which aligned with Windows 7’s end of life – to October 13, 2020. The new cut-off date aligns with both Office 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010.

The support was described by Jared Spataro, corporate vice president for Microsoft 365, in a July 1 announcement of various Office 365 improvements for virtual environments. “Office 365 ProPlus, our flagship Office experience, will be supported on Windows Server 2019,” he stated.

Spataro now heads a newly formed Microsoft 365 marketing group, according to this recent ZDNet story by veteran Microsoft reporter Mary Jo Foley. Microsoft’s reorganization aims to push Microsoft 365 as integrated software conceptually, rather than as a bundle of software products, according to Foley, citing a Microsoft source.

The seemingly shocking notion that Office 365 ProPlus once wasn’t supported on Window Server 2019 for VDI use was perhaps little-known in the first place. It was affirmed back in November in a perhaps obscure Microsoft TechNet forum post.

The lack of support, now reversed, was expected to perhaps drive organizations accessing Office 365 ProPlus on remote servers in VDI scenarios toward the use of Microsoft’s new Windows Virtual Desktop service instead. At least, that was the view of Microsoft partner Nerdio back in April.

There was no apparent explanation for the turnabout on Windows Server 2019 support by Microsoft.

FSLogix Support

In a related VDI announcement, Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 and certain other customers now have the ability to use Microsoft’s FSLogix technology for VDI scenarios “at no additional cost.”

Microsoft bought FSLogix last year. Its technology serves as a profile management solution that helps keep user information together when they roam, as in VDI scenarios when accessing applications from a remote server. Microsoft described it as creating “FSLogix containers” that will work across virtualized environments, “including those provided by Microsoft, Citrix, and VMware.”

Organizations need to have the following licensing in place to have no-cost access to the FSLogix technology:

• Microsoft 365 E3/E5/A3/A5/Student Use Benefits/F1/Business
• Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5
• Windows 10 Education A3/A5
• Windows 10 VDA per user
• Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Client Access License (CAL) and Subscriber Access License (SAL)

Files On-Demand Support

In addition, “in the coming months,” Microsoft plans to add OneDrive Files On-Demand support on Windows Server 2019, according to Spataro.

OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud-based storage service that’s part of most Office 365 subscription plans. Files On-Demand is feature that works with OneDrive to show a Windows Explorer directory view of one’s files stored at Microsoft’s datacenters. Files On-Demand saves local disk space, as the files get downloaded to a desktop only when they are opened by end users.

Other Office 365 Support

Another improvement concerns the Outlook’s e-mail and calendar cache support in VDI environments. IT pros also now can adjust calendar and folder synchronization default settings to improve the VDI experience for end users.

There’s a new “per-machine installation option” for OneDrive. It lets users “share a single installation of the OneDrive app while still maintaining their own individual folders and files,” Microsoft indicated.

Similarly, a new per-user index option in Windows Search now “allows each user profile to persist its own search index.”

Lastly, Microsoft added “per-machine installation” options for “Chat and Collaboration” features when using the Microsoft Teams service. It’s planning to add Teams support, as well, for non-persistent setups, as with Windows Virtual Desktop VDI scenarios. “In the coming months, we’ll offer Calling and Meetings in Teams through Audio/Video Media optimization in collaboration with Citrix,” Spataro indicated.

Today, the tech giant has announced Security Policy Advisor, a new service for Office 365 ProPlus users that will enable them to manage their security policies in a more effective manner. This is only the initial offering among a number of security capabilities Microsoft says will be arriving to ProPlus this year.

Policy management has now been simplified across all devices. Working in conjunction with the newly released Office cloud policy service, policies can now be assigned to users through Azure Active Directory groups, and automatically enforced when these individuals sign in. Furthermore, both managed and unmanaged devices are covered under this service without the additional requirements of any on-premises or modern device infrastructure.

Knowledge specific to organizations will now be utilized to its full extent; the manner in which individuals within an organization use Office will be analyzed, with specific policies being recommended by the service thereafter. These can then be put into action, rolled back, or updated with a single click. The introduction of this feature will help eradicate concerns regarding the element of guesswork in the configuring of security policies.

Moreover, the new service also caters to the dynamic nature of policy-making in a modern workplace. Impact of policies upon employees will be monitored and highlighted for administrators, who can then decide whether the suggested changes should be acted upon, or otherwise. Group policy objects (GPOs) can run in parallel with the Office Cloud Policy service, with the option to retain existing policies as well.

Currently, Security Policy Advisor is only available in English (en-us). However, users can expect much wider availability for the service in the coming weeks. Administrators in organizations that use Office 365 ProPlus can get started right now by configuring Office Policies after signing in to the Office client management portal.
