Microsoft announced on Tuesday that Microsoft Loop components are starting to become available to Microsoft 365 “commercial customers” using Microsoft Teams.

The Loop components are rolling out to desktop and mobile Teams users via its chat function. They are like little applications within Teams, letting users create notes, task lists and tables on the fly, which can be messaged to collaborative team members. Microsoft’s “@mention” messaging capability can be used to send these materials. Coauthoring is supported with the Loop components, and users can see any changes as they get made.

Possible uses for Loop components might include tracking the status of projects or “crowdsourcing” ideas. They also can be used for breakout discussions within conversation threads, the announcement suggested.

Users can start up a Loop component via an icon, which is located under the text box that’s used for Teams chats.

The Loop components have a full version history capability, which lets users go back to an earlier version, if wanted. They also can be discovered through a Teams search, which will also work for Office.com and Office Mobile App users.

Microsoft 365 ‘Breakthrough’ Product

Microsoft Loop was one of the products highlighted by Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, during a recent Microsoft Ignite keynote talk. During this month’s Microsoft Shareholder event, Nadella described Microsoft Loop as the next Microsoft Office365 Vietnam breakthrough product, according to a Nov. 30 Microsoft transcript:

Microsoft Loop is the next big breakthrough in Microsoft 365. It’s a new application for a communication-first and AI-first world that composes people’s content into a collaborative canvas and reimagines how anyone can contribute.

The Loop components are just one aspect of the product, which also includes Loop pages and Loop workspaces. Loop pages are described as “canvases” for organizing Loop components, as well as “files, links or data” for collaboration purposes. Loop workspaces are described a “shared spaces,” used for group projects.

More To Come

Microsoft earlier this month described building specific Loop components, such a “voting table” used to achieve consensus, a “status tracker” for monitoring projects and business workflow components that will work with Dynamics 365 records.

Back then, Microsoft promised to share more on the ability of “third-party application developers” to make Loop components using Microsoft Graph connectors. The details are being reserved for the 2022 Microsoft Build developer event, apparently as yet unscheduled, but which in the past kicked off in May.

The addition of Loop components to Teams chat is just part of Microsoft’s plans. Loop components were also said to be coming to Outlook and OneNote, too, starting as early as this month, although they weren’t mentioned in Microsoft’s Tuesday announcement.

Besides Microsoft 365, Microsoft also have other solutions such as Sharepoint, Azure solutions, Power BI development that can help you improve your enterprise performance.

The Latest From Microsoft

At Microsoft’s Inspire 2021 partner conference this week, the company is unveiling a new industry cloud offering, a virtual Windows desktop solution that is accessible from a web browser and new capabilities in the Teams collaboration app.

Microsoft announced it’s launching a sixth “industry cloud” — a package of cloud tools and services aimed at a particular vertical. The new industry cloud is aimed at sustainability and corporate environmental efforts, something that is “top of mind for every CEO,” Alysa Taylor, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for industry, apps and data marketing, told CRN in an interview.

Rod Pruett, vice president of consulting services at Sunrise Technologies, a Microsoft partner based in Winston-Salem, N.C., said that Microsoft’s retail industry cloud has helped existing customers gain new insights into their e-commerce and business-to-business sales, the shop floor and with moving goods. And for potential customers, the industry clouds offer an easy-to-explain package of goods for a marketing win. “I’ve been doing this for 35 years and I have been so energized with how much capability and the value that we can bring to customers now with these platforms,” Pruett said.

Along with the sixth industry cloud, Microsoft has announced updates for its Viva employee experience platform, the Windows 365 “cloud PC” service and more integrations between Teams and Dynamics 365.

What follows are five big updates in Microsoft 365, Teams and industry clouds announced at Inspire 2021.

Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability

The new Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability will enter public preview later this year and come with tools to help users in all industries record, report and reduce emissions, Microsoft said. The cloud is built on Azure solutions, Dataverse, Power Platform, Power BI and other Microsoft products. It will feature specialized third-party applications, data source and emissions data connectors, according to the company.

“These industry clouds are an enabler for our ecosystem to be able to bring their vertical and micro-vertical expertise to bear,” Taylor said. “Most organizations have a very small sliver of what they can see of their emissions data because the data is so siloed and in so many different places. This is about having industry connectors, like we do in retail and financial services and all of our other industry clouds, to be able to aggregate that data so you actually can look and have a 360-degree view.”

While other technology vendors have created industry-focused cloud offerings, Microsoft wants to beat its competitors’ industry-focused offerings through pulling in data from more disparate sources — not just in the company‘s enterprise resource planning datasets, for example — and deliver insights throughout the Microsoft technology stack, she said.

“This is very unique in the industry and highly differentiated from what SAP and Salesforce are doing,” she said.

Taylor said that companies can, for example, use Cloud for Sustainability to create alerts when an HVAC system is likely to miss its prescribed emissions reduction target. The cloud can then assign an operations manager to make improvements. The sustainability cloud will have uses for all industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to retailers, she said. And midmarket businesses will have need for the cloud as much as the largest enterprises, Taylor said.

The Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability joins the previously announced clouds for financial services, nonprofits, health care, retail and manufacturing.

Windows 365

Microsoft’s new virtual desktop offering, Windows 365, is aimed at meeting the hybrid work needs of small and medium-sized businesses along with certain use cases for larger businesses. Windows 365 is a “cloud PC” solution, Microsoft said, since the desktop is streamed in a web browser and will be available on any device. The offering is not meant to replace Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop, but should be an option for a far greater number of businesses due to its simpler IT deployment and management, the company said.

The ability to access a Windows desktop through a browser is new with Windows 365 — as is the ability to use a virtualized Windows desktop on any device, including Apple Mac, iPad and iPhone devices, along with Android and Linux devices.

Users can pick up where they left off when moving to another device with Windows 365, and the service can be deployed and managed using Microsoft Endpoint Manager in the same way as physical PCs, Microsoft said.

Windows 365 will provide a full Windows 10 experience to start, and then will offer Windows 11 once the new operating system is generally available later this year.

Microsoft will be launching two editions of the service–Windows 365 Business for customers with less than 300 users and Windows 365 Enterprise for larger customers. Windows 365 will be generally available on Aug. 2, and will be offered as a monthly subscription, including through Cloud Solution Provider partners.

Teams And Dynamics 365 Get New Integrations

Thanks to a new integration, Teams customers will now gain free access to view and edit Dynamics 365 data within the Teams app even if they don’t have a Dynamics 365 license, Microsoft announced in connection with Inspire 2021. However, Dynamics 365 purchasers will receive advanced features and analytics, according to Microsoft.

Dynamics 365 users can view and work on customer records from within a Teams chat or channel, Microsoft said. They can add Teams meetings when creating appointments, gaining customer information to review during a Teams call. And, users can save Teams call notes automatically to Dynamics 365 records.

Automatic notifications will alert users to when changes happen, and administrators can configure permissions and access rules to control which users access customer data, according to Microsoft.

Other Teams Updates

Independent software vendors will gain the ability to sell apps within Teams this summer, Microsoft disclosed at Inspire. Teams administrators can buy and install third-party apps from one location in the Teams admin center with a credit card or invoice, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft also announced that commercial marketplace fees are reduced from 20 percent to 3 percent for all transactions. And in addition, ISVs will be given the capability to set different prices for customers and Cloud Solution Provider partners, allowing ISVs to provide CSP partners with margin, Microsoft said.

“CSP partners can also add a price markup when reselling to customers outside of the commercial marketplace,” the company said in a blog post. “This new flexibility is intended to create stronger connections among partners and incentivize ISVs to share margin with resellers.”

Meanwhile, third-party apps for Teams will be released by ISVs including Atlassian Confluence, Salesforce, SAP Cloud for Customer (C4C), ServiceNow and Workday, according to Microsoft. “All these integrations bring structured business processes and data together into the context of collaborative work,” Microsoft said in the blog post.

Viva Updates

The Microsoft Viva employee experience platform will become generally available in the fall with integrations from 21 vendors, including ServiceNow, Qualtrics and Workday, Microsoft announced.

Microsoft also provided updates on tools to help partners and developers with integrating and extending applications into the Viva platform.

Viva Connections APIs will be generally available “later this year,” Microsoft said. The APIs will “make it easy for partners to integrate with the Viva Connections dashboard, enhancing

the discoverability and engagement of their tools directly within the Viva experience,” the company said.

Meanwhile, Viva Learning APIs will enter preview later this year, offering the ability to pull in content from learning providers — as well as due dates and assigned content from learning management systems for use in Teams, Office.com, SharePoint Intranet and Microsoft Search in Bing, according to Microsoft.

Common Data Service, the sophisticated and secure backbone that powers Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, has been renamed to Microsoft Dataverse. This low-code data platform is rapidly changing the way organizations around the world build apps and innovate business processes. A fresh name is just one part of a broader effort introduce the power of what Dataverse can do to individuals and organizations around the world.

Another key part of that strategy is Microsoft Dataverse for Teams—the essential subset of Dataverse capabilities included as a powerful, built-in data platform for millions of Teams users at no additional cost.

As a partner of Microsoft in the Vietnamese market, Opus is also hornored to hear that Microsoft announce that Dataverse for Teams is now generally available, along with a suite of embedded Microsoft Power Platform tools that make it easy for customers to build low-code apps, automate processes, and deploy chatbots without leaving Teams.

Since these embedded capabilities entered preview in September, Microsoft has seen more than double the number of organizations that are using Power Platform in Teams to transform business processes in the digital workspace. Much of this expansion is driven by the approachability of Dataverse for Teams as a low-code back end: customers have already trusted more than 20 terabytes of data in Dataverse for Teams in less than two months of preview alone.

These organizations are empowering their users to save time and solve their toughest challenges, all without leaving Microsoft Teams. T-Mobile, the second largest wireless provider in the US with over 98 million customers, is one such company that is transforming its business with Power Platform and Teams. Brian Hodel, a Senior Developer explains how T-Mobile empowers their employees to create their own solutions and solve business challenges:

Microsoft Dataverse for Teams together with Microsoft Power Platform is a game changer. This powerful combination empowers everyone to work together and solve business challenges that meet the needs of a swiftly changing work environment. Where there used to be no way to easily centralize processes, now everyone has a single source of truth with centralized data and is better positioned to solve business challenges by building apps and bots at scale and innovate more rapidly.”—Brian Hodel, Senior Developer, T-Mobile

So, what is Microsoft Dataverse?

Dataverse lets you securely store and manage data that’s used by business applications. Data within Dataverse is stored within a set of tables. A table is a set of rows (formerly referred to as records) and columns (formerly referred to as fields/attributes). Each column in the table is designed to store a certain type of data, for example, name, age, salary, and so on. Dataverse includes a base set of standard tables that cover typical scenarios, but you can also create custom tables specific to your organization and populate them with data by using Power Query. App makers can then use Power Apps to build rich applications that use this data.

Standard and custom tables within Dataverse provide a secure and cloud-based storage option for your data. Tables let you create a business-focused definition of your organization’s data for use within apps. If you’re not sure whether tables are your best option, consider these benefits:

Easy to manage – Both the metadata and data are stored in the cloud. You don’t need to worry about the details of how they’re stored.

Easy to secure – Data is securely stored so that users can see it only if you grant them access. Role-based security allows you to control access to tables for different users within your organization.

Access your Dynamics 365 Data – Data from your Dynamics 365 applications is also stored within Dataverse, allowing you to quickly build apps that use your Dynamics 365 data and extend your apps with Power Apps.

Rich metadata – Data types and relationships are used directly within Power Apps.

Logic and validation – Define calculated columns, business rules, workflows, and business process flows to ensure data quality and drive business processes.

Productivity tools – Tables are available within the add-ins for Microsoft Excel to increase productivity and ensure data accessibility.

Dataverse has a rich security model to protect the data integrity and privacy of users while promoting efficient data access and collaboration. You can combine business units, role-based security, row-based security, and column-based security to define the overall access to information that users have in a Dataverse environment.

Save time with Power Apps in Teams

With the embedded Power Apps Studio in Teams, it’s now easier than ever to create, edit, and share low-code apps that connect to data from Dataverse or more than 400 other data sources. With native responsive layouts and fluent controls to provide elevated image and video experiences, Teams users can easily create sophisticated custom applications within the Teams app. Telstra, the largest communications company in Australia, is using Teams and Power Platform to empower their field technicians and drive innovation across their operations:

We are really excited about Microsoft Dataverse for Teams, which will provide our end users with a seamless integrated experience along with access to scalable datasets, enterprise security features and the ability for all teams users to now become citizen developers and solve business problems from within Teams.”—Nathan Backers, Lead of PowerFactory, Global Business Services

Infuse teamwork with insight using the Power BI app in Teams

Now, licensed Microsoft Power BI users can enjoy the full capabilities of Power BI in Teams with the Power BI Teams App. Microsoft has created a new experience that centralizes data, reporting, and insights from across the organization in a consumable, shareable way. Users can analyze and connect to usage in Dataverse for Teams, enabling seamless access to insights all where users are working and collaborating. Suffolk Professional Services, known for iconic projects like the tallest residential tower in Boston and a guitar-shaped hotel in Florida, uses Microsoft Teams and Power BI development Vietnam together to make better decisions fast and collaborate from the jobsite to the head office:

We have some very bright engineers in our IT Collaboration team who looked at Microsoft Teams and saw a lot of potential there. We’re using Power Platform and Microsoft apps to create an entire suite of task management tools for construction crews.”—Ajoy Bhattacharya, Senior Director of Innovation and New Technology, Suffolk Professional Services

Help for everyone with Microsoft Power Virtual Agents

Power Virtual Agents for Teams, together with the embedded authoring studio, is now generally available. Teams users can leverage seeded capabilities in-app so everyone can easily build, share, and use chatbots to scale support across organizations. Many organizations, including the City of Ottawa, are using Power Virtual Agents and Teams to address a wide range of employee queries:

In response to the global Covid-19 pandemic, our governmental organization had to quickly transition from an office-oriented role to a work from home role. By utilizing Teams and Power Virtual Agents, we were quickly able to deploy what we dubbed “OBot”, a Power Virtual Agents based internal bot for employees deployed via Teams that provides quick answers and how-tos for all work from home related issues, easing the support burden for not only the IT service desk, but also to support HR and other departments.”—Gary Belcourt, Solution Project Manager, City of Ottawa

HR and FAQ bots that connect Power Virtual Agents to company data via Microsoft Dataverse for Teams will save an organization time and money.

Microsoft Dataverse for Teams honors the existing data governance paradigms of Power Platform and enables access control in the Teams Admin Center like any other Teams feature. The Power Platform admin center provides more detail, including monitoring dedicated capacity utilization and DLP policies.

Microsoft Dataverse for Teams greatly simplifies environment lifecycle management and user security role management by aligning to Teams constructs. Customers can also use Governance workflows found in Power Platform COE toolkit solution and customize as needed.

The month of December is coming to a close, and it is now time to look back at the new features introduced in Microsoft 365 this year. In 2020, Microsoft announced plenty of new services and features to help users deal with the ongoing pandemic and adapts to remote learning or working.

As usual, we have divided this recap into different sections to highlight different Microsoft 365 apps and services, including OneDrive, Teams, Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel, and more. Here’s a look at what you need to know.

OneDrive

We’ll start with Microsoft’s file hosting and sharing service OneDrive. The firm added lots of features, most notably, the announcement of new Microsoft Teams integrations. OneDrive gained new file-sharing capabilities in Teams to provide a consistent sharing experience across Microsoft 365. Microsoft also made it possible to store Teams meeting and call recordings in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Intranet.

This month, OneDrive picked up a new feature called “Add to OneDrive” that makes it easy for users of the service to add shared folders into their private OneDrive folder list. Microsoft also increased the upload file size limit from 15 GB to 100 GB in OneDrive and SharePoint for all users. Other important features added to OneDrive can be seen below.

Improved new first-run experience in OneDrive

The company delivered a new OneDrive widget for iOS 14

OneDrive on iOS got a new home experience

Enhanced file protection and governance capabilities in OneDrive and SharePoint

The new file detail pane and activity feed allows users to see file activity and comments in a single view.

OneDrive for iOS now supports uploading and viewing Live Photos

OneDrive family and group sharing, which allows users to predefine their family or friend group for sharing photos, albums, or documents.

Though not included in the year’s news, there’s still more coming for OneDrive in 2021. The company announced that it’s bringing Dark Mode to OneDrive for the web across personal and commercial accounts. The update is expected to go live in January 2021.

Microsoft Teams

The Covid-19 pandemic might be upon us, but Microsoft Teams shows no signs of slowing down in terms of new features. In 2020, Microsoft rolled out a bunch of big updates for Teams. The first of them is the ability to create Virtual Breakout rooms during meetings.

The company released new personal features for preview in the Microsoft Teams desktop and web clients and mobile apps. Thanks to these features, users can now chat with friends or family members who don’t have a Teams account. The personal version of the app provides location alerts when a family member leaves or arrives at designated locations.

Some of the other added features for Microsoft Teams include interoperability between Skype for Business and Teams, and the ability to switch between personal and work accounts. We invite you to check out our in-depth recap post to read more about Teams updates.

It looks like Microsoft Teams will continue its incredible run of innovation and growth. We remind you that there’s still more coming for Teams in early 2021. The popular collaboration platform will soon support native OS notifications on Mac and Windows, meeting reactions, and more.

Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Third on our list will be Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. In August, Microsoft announced that an audio transcription feature is now integrated into Word for the web. The feature lets users transcribe recorded video/audio files and live meetings. Also falling under the same category is the ability to dictate with voice commands in Office mobile and the web version of Word.

As for Microsoft Excel, the company announced some important updates in June. The first is Forms for Excel, a new experience that makes it easier to gather information from employees within an organization. Money in Excel, is another new consumer-focused solution that helps to manage accounts, including budgets, transactions, credit or debit cards, and much more.

Finally, with Outlook, there was a major change earlier this fall. Microsoft introduced cloud settings and roaming signatures in Outlook for Windows. This means that users can now save some settings to their cloud profile and sync their Outlook signature across devices. Also, Outlook for Mac got updated with a fresh new look to prep for Big Sur.

The new Lists app, Native Office 365 Apps for M1 Macs, and more

To end the recap, we’ll look at some updates for SharePoint and the other Microsoft 365 apps. First of all, the SharePoint Spaces is now generally available, and developers can now create mixed-reality spaces. There’s also a new My Feed web part for SharePoint, which shows relevant content from across Microsoft 365.

As we covered before, the new Lists app, one of the newest apps for Microsoft 365, now helps users track information and organize work. Microsoft Lists supports commenting, and it provides various views in Teams. The list of new additions to Microsoft 365 includes a new version of Microsoft 365 for Mac apps that runs natively on the new M1-powered Apple MacBooks.

Needless to say, Microsoft definitely improved on Microsoft 365 in 2020, and the updates to Microsoft Office365 Vietnam reflect that. The firm has announced many new services, including Project Moca, Universal Print, a Microsoft family safety app, Microsoft Editor, and Microsoft Productivity Score. We remind you that you can keep up to date on all the latest features and news via our dedicated news hub.

Microsoft has announced a roadmap to stop support for Internet Explorer 11 in its Microsoft 365 apps, starting with Microsoft Teams. The move will modernize the Teams web app and push customers toward adopting IE’s successor, Microsoft Edge. The company also confirms their deprecation of Microsoft Edge Legacy.

If you are interested in learning more about Microsoft technologies, do not hesitate to give Opus Solution a call. We are a business consultant in Vietnam, specializing in consulting and providing solutions of Microsoft besides Sharepoint such as Azure solutions, Power BI development.

Microsoft has made continuity of user workflow and collaboration a mainstay of its Microsoft 365 suite of software. This includes making all these apps fully functional and accessible through a web browser whether on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. As the Microsoft Teams app continues to become the primary portal for enterprise user collaboration, a modern browser is a must have to continue pushing these abilities.

With that in mind, Microsoft has announced their plans to drop support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) in Microsoft 365 at the end of November. The remaining Microsoft 365 apps will stop supporting IE11 next year:

As Microsoft points out, IE11 was initially released on October 17, 2013, as part of Windows 8.1. The last version of Internet Explorer was also released as part of Windows 10 in July 2015 with Microsoft Edge Legacy set as the default browser.

In other words, IE11 has missed out on all the improvements that make web-based apps and platforms functional today.

Since the company is positioning its Teams app to be the hub for so many aspects of the company’s enterprise productivity and collaboration offerings, dropping support for Internet Explorer 11 in Teams first makes a lot of sense.

“We believe that Microsoft 365 subscribers, in both consumer and commercial contexts, will be well served with this change through faster and more responsive web access to greater sets of features in everyday toolsets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint Portal, and more.”

With the Teams app leading the way out of IE11, the remaining programs in Microsoft 365 will follow suit in August 2021.

Microsoft was clear that this does not mean the end of IE11 itself. The Redmond company knows IE11 is a key aspect of many Line of Business (LOB) apps and workflows within enterprises and that support does not change. Support for Internet Explorer 11 on the OS will continue to be connected to the OS’s lifecycle which is laid out on the Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Lifecycle support page.

Alongside the plan to end support for Internet Explorer 11 for the Teams app and the rest of the Microsoft 365 suite, an additional announcement was made concerning Microsoft Edge Legacy. This is the version of Edge that was default in Windows 10 when the OS was released in 2015 and is now being replaced with new Microsoft Edge which is based on the open-source Chromium rendering engine.

As of March 9, 2021, this legacy version of Edge will no longer receive security updates in Windows 10. Enterprises should begin preparing to replace legacy Edge with either the new Microsoft Edge which is already shipping with a full collection of deployment and management tools for IT pros and admins, or their supported browser of choice.

At some point, expect Microsoft Edge Legacy to be deprecated and removed from Windows 10 in a future feature update. Without receiving security updates, it will eventually become a liability for organizations to keep on their end user systems.

Microsoft today announced a slew of new products, but at the core of the release is a major change to how the company is marketing its tools and services to consumers.

Office 365, which has long been the brand for the company’s subscription service for its productivity tools like Word, Excel and Outlook, is going away. On April 21, it’ll be replaced by new Microsoft 365 plans, including new personal and family plans (for up to six people) at $6.99 and $9.99 respectively. That’s the same price as the existing Office 365 Personal and Home plans.

“We are basically evolving our subscription from — in our minds — a set of tools to solutions that help you manage across your work and life,” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s CVP of Modern Life, Search and Devices, told me ahead of today’s announcement.

Microsoft is making similar branding changes to its business plans for Office 365. They are a bit more convoluted, with Office 365 Business Premium now called Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Microsoft 365 Business now becoming Microsoft 365 Business Premium, but for the most part, this is about branding while prices stay the same.

These new Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans will include access to Outlook and the Office desktop apps for Windows and macOS, 1 terabyte of OneDrive storage per person (including unlimited access to the more secure OneDrive Personal Vault service) and 50 gigabytes of Outlook.com email storage, Skype call recording and 60 minutes of Skype landline and mobile phone calls.

And since this is now Microsoft 365 and not Office 365, you can also get Windows 10 technical support with the subscription, as well as additional security features to protect you from phishing and malware attacks.

More than 37 million people currently have personal Office 365 subscriptions and chances are these lower prices will bring more users to the platform in the long run. As Mehdi stressed, Microsoft’s free offerings aren’t going away.

But with today’s release, Microsoft isn’t just changing the branding and launching these new plans, it’s also highlighting quite a few new capabilities in its various applications that are either launching today or in the coming months.

Microsoft Teams gets a personal edition

The highlight of this launch, especially given the current situation around COVID-19, is likely the announcement of Teams for consumers. Teams is already one of Microsoft’s fastest growing products for businesses with 44 million people using it. But in its efforts to help people bridge their work and personal lives, it will now launch a new Teams edition for consumers, as well.

Just like you can switch between work and personal accounts in Outlook, you will soon be able to do the same in Teams. The personal teams view will look a little bit different, with shared calendars for the family, access to OneDrive vaults, photo sharing, etc., but it sits on the same codebase as the business version. You’ll also be able to do video calls and shared to-do lists.

Better writing through AI

About a year ago, Microsoft announced that Word Online would get a new AI-powered editor that would help you write better. You can think of it as a smarter grammar checker that can fix all of your standard grammar mistakes but can also help you avoid overly complex sentences and bias in your word choices.

This editor is now the Microsoft Editor, and the company is expanding it well beyond Word. The new AI-powered service is now available in 20 languages in Word and Outlook.com — and maybe most importantly, it’ll be available as a Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome plug-in, too.

Free users will get basic spelling and grammar features, while Microsoft 365 subscribers will get a number of more advanced features like the ability to ask the editor to suggest a rewrite of a mangled sentence, a plagiarism checker, style analysis to see if your writing is unclear or too formal and access to an inclusive language critique to help you avoid unintentional bias.

If you’ve used Grammarly in the past, then a lot of this will sound familiar. Both services now offer a similar set of capabilities, but Microsoft may have an edge with its ability to rewrite sentences.

Better presentations through technology

In a similar vein, Microsoft also launched a presentation coach for PowerPoint as a limited test last September. This AI-driven feature helps you avoid filler words and other presentation no-nos.

This feature first launched in the online version of PowerPoint, with a basic set of features. Now, Microsoft 365 subscribers will get two new advanced features, too, that can help you avoid a monotone pitch that puts your audience to sleep and avoid grammar mistakes in your spoken sentences.

Currently, these are still available as a free preview to all but will become Microsoft 365-only features soon.

PowerPoint is also getting an updated Designer to help you create better presentations. It can now easily turn text into a timeline, for example, and when you add an image, it can present you with a set of potential slide layouts.

Microsoft 365 subscribers now also get access to over 8,000 images and 175 looping videos from Getty Images, as well as 300 new fonts and 2,800 new icons.

Excel + Plaid

For you spreadsheet jockeys out there, Microsoft also has some good news, especially if you want to use Excel to manage your personal budgets.

In partnership with Plaid, you can now link your bank accounts to Excel and import all of your expenses into your spreadsheets. With that, you can then categorize your spend and build your own personal Mint. This feature, dubbed “Money in Excel,” will launch in the U.S. in the coming months.

In addition, Excel is getting a lot more cloud- and AI-driven data types that now cover over 100 topics, including nutrition, movies, places, chemistry and — because why not — Pokémon. Like some of the previous features, this is an extension of the work Microsoft did on Excel in the last few years, starting with the ability to pull in stock market and geographical data.

And just like with the previous set of features, you’ll need a Microsoft 365 subscription to get access to these additional data types. Otherwise, you’ll remain restricted to the stock market and geography data types, which will become available to Office Insiders in the spring and then Personal and Family subscribers in the U.S. in the coming months.

Outlook gets more personal

Even though you may want to forget about Outlook and ignore your inbox for a while, Microsoft doesn’t. In Outlook on the web, you can now link your personal and work calendars to ensure you don’t end up with a work meeting in the middle of a personal appointment, because Chris from marketing really needs another sync meeting during your gym time even though a short email would suffice.

Outlook for Android can now summarize and read your emails aloud for you, too. This feature will roll out in the coming months.

Family Safety

While most of the new features here focus on existing applications, Microsoft is also launching one completely new app: Microsoft Family Safety. This app is coming to Microsoft 365 subscribers on iOS and Android and will bring together a set of tools that can help families manage their online activities and track the location of family members.

The app lets families manage the screen time of their kids (and maybe parents, too) across Windows, Android and Xbox, for example. Parents can also set content filters that only allow kids to download age-appropriate apps. But it also allows parents to track their kids in the real world through location tracking and even driving reports. This, as Mehdi stressed, is a feature that kids can turn off, but they’ll probably have to explain themselves to their parents then. Indeed, he stressed that a lot of what the app does is give parents a chance to have a dialog with their kids. What makes the service unique is that it works across platforms, with iOS support coming in the future.

This app is launching as a limited preview now and will be available in the coming months (I think you can spot a trend here).

Partner benefits

Mehdi noted that Microsoft is also partnering with companies like Adobe, Bark, Blinkist, Creative Live, Experian, Headspace and TeamSnap to provide Microsoft 365 subscribers with additional benefits like limited-time access to their products and services. Subscribers will get three months of free access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography plan, for example.

At the core of today’s updates, though, is a mission to bring a lot of the productivity tools that people know from their work life to their personal life, too, with the personal edition of Teams being the core example.

“We’re very much excited to bring this type of value — not increase the price of Office 365 — take a big step forward, and then move to this,” Mehdi said. “We think now more than ever, it is valuable for people to have the subscription service for their life that helps them make the most of their time, protects their family, lets them develop and grow. And our goal or aspiration is: Can we give you the most valuable subscription for your life? I know people value their video subscriptions and music subscriptions. Our aspiration is to provide the most valuable subscription for your life via Microsoft 365 Personal and Family.”
