A global financial services firm we worked with really seemed to get the digital message. They hired a chief digital officer who led many locally successful projects to improve the customer experience.

These included making it easier to move from in-person to online for certain tasks, plus targeted offers based on customer data. They felt confident they were creating great customer value. But there was a problem. Those local innovations ended up adding more complexity to the existing fragmented business processes, systems, and data. Although the customer experience often improved — and in some cases, revenue increased — the rise in the cost-to-serve eclipsed the gains and added other risks like cybersecurity and system crashes.

In the digital era, how firms create and capture value has changed profoundly. But most aren’t keeping up. Our research shows that the average firm today is leaving an eye-opening 50% of potential digital value or more on the table, compared to leading firms.

In our experience working with global enterprises in every industry, the main reason for this seems clear: firms often get caught up in thinking about “doing” a digital transformation initiative rather than thinking concretely about how they will create and then capture value with digital. The focus should start and end with value. This means changing the way you think, operate, develop talent, keep score, organize, partner, and innovate to compete in the digital economy. We call companies that are doing this “future ready,” and the most successful among them are generating 70% or more of the potential value from their digital initiatives — significantly more than the average firm.

Three Types of Digital Value

In helping leaders and their firms shift to a future ready mindset, a key step is recognizing three types of digital value — these types represent where and how value can be created, as well as the areas where there is a risk of leaving value on the table. We’ll use the global building materials firm CEMEX to illustrate.

Value from customers.

This encompasses increased revenue from cross-selling and new offerings, as well as more customer stickiness and loyalty. Helping customers meet their needs, providing a great customer experience, and acting consistently and with purpose helps create value. CEMEX started their transformation by focusing on customer value. Recognizing that construction site managers are key customers with a tough job, in 2017 the firm created the CEMEX Go mobile app, a single place for those managers to get everything they need from CEMEX such as advice, pricing, ordering, and an Uber-like tracking experience for cement delivery. CEMEX Go was the breakthrough initiative for the firm, resulting in a strong increase in revenue for the channel as well as a substantially higher net promoter score.

Value from operations.

The foundation of digital business, value from operations includes reduced cost and increased efficiency and speed. Firms can create this type of value by developing modular components, creating digital components that can be reused, automating processes, and becoming more open and agile. CEMEX focused broadly on operational efficiency and reducing the app’s cost-to-serve while continuing to improve customer experience.

Value from ecosystems.

This includes revenue from a company’s ecosystem participants plus new value from customers and operations through partnering. This type is the most overlooked, or deferred as risky, but as firms move to more digitally-enabled and partner-based models, value from ecosystems becomes more important and influential on the bottom line. Almost any firm can generate substantial value from ecosystems in which they leverage partners for both reach (to access more customers) and range (to add more products and services). CEMEX does this with its building materials distribution network, Construrama, the largest retail building material store chain in Mexico, and in other Latin American countries where CEMEX operates. In 2018 CEMEX launched its Construrama Online Store to continue efforts to transform the construction industry using an ecosystem approach.

Taking Action to Create Digital Value

Once you’ve got a clearer view on the different types of value, our research identifies several key actions you can take to create digital value:

Identify domain opportunities.

This means thinking beyond your industry. Digital is about imagining what’s next, and what you didn’t think is possible, to develop entirely new value propositions for your customers. For example, Shopify enables the domain of online business, providing a platform with partners that supports the entire customer journey, cutting across several industries. Services include building a brand, creating an online presence, setting up a store, selling, logistics and shipping, processing payments, and managing day-to-day. Any one of these activities could be its own business — Shopify creates value by offering an integrated solution to meet customers’ entire domain need and is now number two behind Amazon with 10.3% of U.S. retail e-commerce sales in 2021.

To identify domain opportunities, start by looking at your typical customer’s end-to-end journey, including beyond your company’s scope, and consider how you could improve it — or even own it as a one-stop destination by partnering to add complementary services.

Build mutually-reinforcing future ready capabilities.

Lots of companies fail by setting out to change their culture, often with a program dedicated to describing (or, really, prescribing) the to-be culture. This is putting the cart before the horse. Culture is built through routines, shared values, and informal norms — the work habits of the enterprise — not by dictates and training. This kind of habits change is better tackled by building the future ready capabilities that will help your firm create value from your digital initiatives, and by ensuring they reinforce each other.

For example, CEMEX integrated CEMEX Go with new systems and processes for order fulfillment and CRM, including a digital confirmation capability — an automatic review of inventory, transport, and other components of the customer journey when an order is confirmed online. By 2022, CEMEX had automated order fulfillment for the cement product type, and was then able to build on that capability and its constituent components to automate the more complex coordination process for delivering the ready-mix concrete product type. The complementary systems and their associated habits and processes provided mutually-reinforcing learning that accumulated over time.

Track digital value with a dashboard.

Dashboards can be very helpful for measuring milestones of capability and digital value creation along the way, as well as for inspiring the company to stay on track, as it can often take significant time for changes to show up in the bottom line. Effective dashboards enable everyone to see current status and progress, and to make better course corrections, helping to move from a command-and-control model to a coach-and-communication orientation.

Schneider Electric’s Digital Flywheel provides a good example of the benefits of using a dashboard. They built the flywheel to help drive their efforts to expand digital offerings to include energy efficiency management, going beyond selling energy products. The dashboard does this by illustrating the four components of their IoT-enabled business model and capturing and tracking financial performance for each of the four individually. But just as important, it shows how the four components work together to produce higher value and sales for the company — and increased value for clients, often measured as energy efficiency improvement. The dashboard helped them understand how to grow this distinctive business model, which now accounts for 50% of their annual revenue of 30 billion Euros.

Recruit digital partners.

Partnering is not the goal, but rather a way for future ready firms to achieve their goal of creating value from ecosystems. Digital partners can help increase a company’s reach and range through digital connections. Look at companies like Zillow that are finding new ways to meet customers’ needs in the home buying journey. They started with helping customers locate a home, but the journey soon spanned six or more industries such as insurance and finance. Bringing in partners like real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and lawyers, and providing many of those services digitally as an integrated offering, makes that home buying journey simpler and a better experience. And it creates opportunities for Zillow to capture more value from the transaction spend.

Invest in digital savviness.

Digitally savvy firms don’t have an “us vs. them” or a finger-pointing mentality between IT/digital and rest of the organization. Everyone aspires to be digitally savvy from the board to new hires. There is joint accountability for the benefits (innovation) and the risks (outages and cyber attacks). DBS in Singapore decided early on in its transformation to foster digital savviness throughout the entire enterprise, with initiatives such as embedding innovation advocates in each business unit, implementing agile practices, training to reskill and upskill employees, and promoting hands-on experience with technology.

The digital wave continues and it is easy to get swept away in the flood of transformation initiatives. But in order to become truly future ready — and to avoid leaving substantial money on the table — stay focused on specific ways to create and capture digital value, and track that value for all to see.

At a time of rapid outbreak of various viruses, there is a growing demand for working from home due to limited travel. As such, companies desperately need a platform that can make it easier for employees to work together and many Vietnam business consultant out there can help them to solve this problem, not only to help you save costs and time, but also improve the productivity of your business.

The increasing demand for always-on connectivity, immersive experiences, secure collaboration, and remote human relationships is pushing networks to their limits, while the market is driving down price. The network infrastructure must ensure operators are able to optimize costs and gain efficiencies, while enabling the development of personalized and differentiated services. To address the requirements of rolling out 5G, operators will face strong challenges, including high capital expenditure (CapEx) investments, an increased need for scale, automation, and secure management of the massive volume of data it will generate.

Today starts a new chapter in our close collaboration with the telecommunications industry to unlock the power of 5G and bring cloud and edge closer than ever. We’re building a carrier-grade cloud and bringing more Microsoft technology to the operator’s edge. This, in combination with our developer ecosystem, will help operators to future proof their networks, drive down costs, and create new services and business models.

In Microsoft, operators get a trusted partner who will empower them to unlock the potential of 5G. Enabling them to offer a range of new services such as ultra-reliable low-latency connectivity, mixed reality communications services, network slicing, and highly scalable IoT applications to transform entire industries and communities.

By harnessing the power of Microsoft Azure solutions, on their edge, or in the cloud, operators can transition to a more flexible and scalable model, drive down infrastructure cost, use AI and machine learning (ML) to automate operations and create service differentiation. Furthermore, a hybrid and hyper-scale infrastructure will provide operators with the agility they need to rapidly innovate and experiment with new 5G services on a programmable network.

More specifically, we will further support operators as they evolve their infrastructure and operations using technologies such as software-defined networking, network function virtualization, and service-based architectures. We are bringing to market a carrier-grade platform for edge and cloud to support the operator’s goals to future proof their infrastructure with disaggregated, and containerized network architectures. Recognizing that not everything will move to the public cloud, we will meet operators where they are—whether at the enterprise edge, the network edge, or in the cloud.

Our approach is built on the acquisitions of industry leaders in cloud-native network functions—Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch and on the development of Azure Edge Zones. By bringing together hundreds of engineers with deep experience in the telecommunications space, we are ensuring that our product development process is catering to the most relevant networking needs of the operators. We will leverage the strengths of Microsoft to extend and enhance the current capabilities of industry-leading products such as Affirmed’s 5G core and Metaswitch’s UC portfolio. These capabilities, combined with Microsoft’s broad developer ecosystem and deep business to business partnership programs, provide Microsoft with a unique ability to support the operators as they seek to monetize the capabilities of their networks.

Your customer, your service, powered by our technology

As we build out our partnerships with different operators, it is clear to us that there will be different approaches to technology adoption based on business needs. Some operators may choose to adopt the Azure platform and select a varied mix of virtualized or containerized network function providers. We also have operators that have requested complete end-to-end services as components for their offers. As a part of these discussions, many operators have identified points of control that are important to them, for example:

Control over where a slice, network API, or function is presented to the customer.

Definition of where and how traffic enters and exits their network.

Visibility and control over where key functions are executed for a given customer scenario.

Configuration and performance parameters of core network functions.

As we build out Azure for Operators, we recognize the importance of ensuring operators have the control and visibility they require to manage their unique industry requirements. To that end, here is how our assets come together to provide operators with the platform they need.

Interconnect

It starts with the ability to interconnect deeply with the operator’s network around the globe. We have one of the largest networks that connect with operators at more than 170 points of presence and over 20,000 peering connections around the globe, putting direct connectivity within 25 miles of 85 percent of the world’s GDP. More than 200 operators have already chosen to integrate with the Azure network through our ExpressRoute service, enabling enterprises and partners to link their corporate networks privately and securely to Azure services. We also provide additional routes to connect to the service through options as varied as satellite connectivity and TV White Space spectrum.

Edge platform

This reach helps us to supply operators with cloud computing options that meet the customer wherever those capabilities are needed: at the enterprise edge, the network edge, the network core, or in the cloud. The various form factors, optimized to support the location in which they are deployed, are supported by the Azure platform—providing virtual machine and container services with a common management framework, DevOps support, and security control.

Network functions

We believe in an open platform that leverages the strengths of our partners. Our solutions are a combination of virtualized and containerized services as composable functions, developed by us and by our Network Equipment Provider partners, to support operators’ services such as the Radio Access Network, Mobile Packet Core, Voice and Interconnect services, and other network functions.

Technology from Affirmed and Metaswitch Networks will provide services for Mobile Packet Core, Voice, and Interconnect services.

Cloud solutions and Azure IoT for operators

By exposing these services through the Azure platform, we can combine them with other Azure capabilities such as Azure Cognitive Services (used by more than 1 million developers processing more than 10 billion transaction per day), Azure Machine Learning, and Azure IoT, to bring the power of AI and automation to the delivery of network services. These capabilities, in concert with our partnerships with OSS and BSS providers, enables us to help operators streamline and simplify operations, create new services to monetize the network, and gain greater insights into customer behavior.

In IoT our primary focus is simplifying our solutions to accelerate what we can do together from the edge to the cloud. We’ve done so by creating a platform that provides simple and secure provisioning of applications and devices to Azure cloud solutions through Azure IoT Central, which is the fastest and easiest way to build IoT solutions at scale. IoT Central enables customers to provision an IoT app in seconds, customize it in hours, and go to production the same day. IoT Plug and Play dramatically simplifies all aspects of IoT device support and provides devices that “just work” with any solution and is the perfect complement to achieve speed and simplicity through IoT Central. Azure IoT Central also gives the Mobile Operator the opportunity to monetize more of the IoT solution and puts them in a position to be a re-seller of the IoT Central application platform through their own solutions. Learn more about using Azure IoT for operators here.

Cellular connectivity is increasingly important for IoT solutions and represents a vast and generational shift for mobile operators as the share of devices in market shifts towards the enterprise. We will continue our deep partnership with operators to enable fast and efficient app development and deployment, which is critical to success at the edge. This will help support scenarios such as asset tracking across industries, manufacturing and distribution of smart products, and responsive supply chains. It will also help support scenarios where things are geographically dispersed, such as smart city automation, utility monitoring, and precision agriculture.

At Build 2020, Microsoft announced the new capability of Azure IoT Central which makes it easy to connect edge computing devices running Azure IoT Edge software. Azure Sphere, a secure microcontroller from Microsoft is now tightly integrated with Azure IoT Central.

Azure IoT Central – A turnkey IoT solution

Launched a couple of years ago, Azure IoT Central is one of the first multi-tenant IoT SaaS platforms covering end-to-end scenarios for device management, telemetry ingestion, command control, rule-based alerts, and rich visualization.

IoT Central has all the ingredients of a best-in-class IoT platform. Customers can quickly onboard devices, ingest telemetry, perform remote maintenance, build KPI dashboards, and even integrate with third-party solutions. IoT Central can be easily customized to meet the needs of enterprises. Solution providers and systems integrators can also white-label IoT Central to expose a multi-tenant connected devices platform to their customers.

IoT Central comes with scenario-based templates for customers and system integrators to quickly build solutions targeting markets such as retail, energy, government and healthcare.

For example, the retail industry templates include connected logistics and smart inventory management. For the government and public sector, IoT Central has smart city use cases such as connected waste management, water consumption monitoring and water quality monitoring.

The templates act as a starting point for rapidly building connected solutions running in the cloud. Each template can be customized further to meet specific business needs and requirements.

Azure IoT Edge – An extension of Azure IoT Hub at the Edge

Microsoft’s Azure IoT Edge is a software that extends the public cloud capabilities to the edge computing layer. The platform mimics a local version of Azure IoT Hub, a service that tackles device management and device communication in the cloud.

Apart from IoT Hub, Azure IoT Edge can run edge-optimized services such as Azure Functions, Azure Stream Analytics and Azure SQL Edge as modules. The platform runs these services as modules which are container images built for X86 or ARM architecture. Customers can build custom modules that can run business logic at the edge. All the modules are registered and managed through the Azure IoT Hub interface.

Azure IoT Edge can run machine learning models as modules that can perform inference in real-time on the data ingested by the sensors.

Azure IoT Edge is a mature platform that can function as a protocol gateway, transparent gateway, and fully-fledged edge layer with offline functionality.

As a protocol gateway, Azure IoT Edge can translate traditional protocols such as Modbus, CAN bus and OPC-UA to modern communication protocols such as AMQP, MQTT and HTTP.

A transparent gateway acts as a conduit between the local devices and the Azure IoT Hub multiplexing the communication through a single connection to the cloud.

Azure IoT Edge can be deployed in scenarios where connectivity to the cloud is intermittent. For example, multiple sensors and actuators can be connected to an Azure IoT Edge instance deployed in trucks used in mining environments. IoT Edge synchronizes data with IoT Hub as soon as it regains connectivity to the cloud.

IoT Central can now onboard edge devices that manage sensors and actuators deployed at the edge. Customers can gain access to the leaf devices connected to IoT Edge and control them via the IoT Central user interface.

It is possible to connect cameras and sensors to IoT Central via Azure IoT Edge to access the feed and telemetry data through the dashboards. Combined with the AI inference capabilities of Azure IoT Edge, IoT Central can send alerts when a specific object is detected in the inbound camera feed.

First-class support for Azure Sphere in IoT Central

In 2018, Microsoft launched a microcontroller (MCU) meant to run at the edge computing layer. With the hardware-based root of trust combined with a custom Linux kernel, it is designed to be secure from the ground up.

Azure Sphere represents a new class of secure, connected, crossover MCU that integrates real-time processing capabilities with the ability to run a high-level operating system. It enables original device manufacturers (ODM) to gain instant and secure connectivity to the cloud. By embedding the MCU in a connected device, either alongside or in place of existing MCU(s), device manufacturers gain enhanced security, productivity, and opportunity to participate in the IoT revolution.

According to Microsoft, IoT Central’s tight integration with Azure Sphere enables device builders to model Azure Sphere devices with device templates and easily reuse them in different applications. With future integrations, Operators will be able to enjoy simplified security management from a single pane of glass with optimized device management experiences.

At Build 2020, Microsoft launched a new device template and a sample application for Azure Sphere to connect and control the device from IoT Central. This enables customers to quickly build solutions based on Azure Sphere.

With support for edge devices and Azure Sphere, IoT Central can now address new scenarios making it the most versatile SaaS-based IoT solution.

We have reached an inflection point where business success will be determined not just by sound business thinking but by the use of technology to execute on that thinking in an optimal fashion. Digital transformation is all about thinking and imagining how business models and processes are affected by the application of technologies that, up until a few years ago, were nonexistent in the business world or deemed cost-prohibitive.

It is a challenge to pin down exactly how advanced business transformation is in the modern economy. But a 2016 survey from Vanson Bourne and Dell suggests that, at the time, only one in three businesses had implemented elements of digital transformation. Just three years later, IDG’s 2019 State of Digital Business Transformation(registration required) suggests 93% of traditional, established businesses — and 89% of startups — are putting in place digital business plans.

Of course, there is no standard definition for digital transformation. The Vanson Bourne study defines digital transformation as being able to innovate in an agile way, predict new opportunities, increase transparency and trust, offer personalized experiences, and be always on in real-time.

More Than One Definition

A research report from Forrester (paywall) defines digital transformation as:

• A focus on customer outcomes. Digital transformation increases business velocity and customer engagement by monitoring customer outcomes in real-time. This may also enable the servitization of product-based business models so a customer can, instead of buying the product itself, buy the outcome the product provides.

• The reinvention of business models and new revenue opportunities with digital technology at the core, often with the realization of new business models, arises from new business opportunities not possible prior to digital transformation.

When we define digital transformation like this, we see a great deal of it has already taken place in industries like manufacturing.

My company’s 2018 study of manufacturing transformation, for instance, reveals that manufacturers have dramatically shifted from make-to-stock manufacturing to a to-order approach. This change is highly dependent on the adoption and full exploitation of company-wide planning and execution systems like enterprise resource planning (ERP) to match inventory and capacity to anticipated demand in real-time. Study respondents claimed they are three times as likely to engineer products to customer orders as they were in 2011.

Far-Reaching Implications

In all, 80% of manufacturers in our study are now engaged in to-order business models. What is even more interesting is that, while models like engineer-to-order or configure-to-order have been associated with business-to-business companies, including industrial manufacturing, we see food and beverage manufacturers and other consumer companies involved as well.

What this means is that ERP technology has already helped these companies respond faster to inbound demand and start manufacturing processes the day of an order and sometimes even ship that same day. That was unheard of years ago.

Of course, ERP has enabled digital transformation for sectors outside of manufacturing, but these industries have not adopted ERP as thoroughly. Respondents also included oil and gas extraction, mechanical contracting, telecommunications, aerospace and aviation. Twenty percent or more of these overall respondents said their enterprise software could incorporate data from internet of things (IoT), be opened up as a web service to outside users and be used through a mobile-friendly interface — evidence of fairly advanced digital transformation.

What Is Next?

ERP has already quietly delivered digital transformation, enabling a manufacturing evolution toward to-order business models. The next round of change will be more disruptive and overtly digital, driven by IoT and artificial intelligence (AI). A different study my company conducted focused on how companies are budgeting for digital transformation. Most funded projects, though, focus on more proven technologies, including mobility and analytics.

Analytics may seem like yesterday’s news, too, but the democratization of analytics drives change as users can configure their own data cockpit to display the real-time information required for their specific jobs. This puts more information in the hands of frontline employees, enabling faster, distributed decision making that still reflects the concerns of the business.

Are you able to keep pace with these rapid changes? To make sure, why not conduct a quick audit of:

• Business processes that are a constraint to your success along with the enterprise systems that touch each process.

• Processes that define and differentiate your business and the enterprise system each process touches.

• The different pathways your enterprise software offers for data to enter the system from mobile or connected devices, customers or suppliers.

You may use what you discover to eliminate barriers to improved customer experience, scale and expand upon current customer experience successes, launch a new product or service offering or even servitize an existing product-based business model.

Upward Trend

The time to ask these questions and implement transformational technologies is right now. The budgeting study revealed that only 5% of respondents planned to reduce their budgets for digital transformation. Just over half say their digital transformation funding will increase in the next two years.

Perhaps most remarkable is that companies who report being behind the trend (digital transformation laggards) are 6% more likely than other respondents to plan budget increases of 10% or more. Companies that are behind are making investments so they can gain ground against their competitors.

So digital transformation has already happened. The next surge of digital transformation is already underway, and companies that ride the wave will surge ahead while those sitting out will be left behind.

Over the last few years, most discussions about the next year’s Digital Transformation trends had begun to feel a bit repetitive: Cloud, Edge Compute, the IoT, AR… It always seemed like the same chairs being rearranged around the same old room. 2020 will be a departure from that. While the same core technologies that dominated these discussions will continue to be foundational to our collective digital transformation journey, 2020 will be defined by a fresh new class of technologies ready to graduate to the sidelines to center stage. Among them: 5G, AI, advanced data analytics, but also some that may surprise you. Without further ado, here are the 10 among them that I believe will be the most significant in 2020.

5G for You and Me: 2020 will be the year of 5G. With some of the biggest names in telecommunications, like Qualcomm, AT&T, Verizon, Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei making sure that global 5G deployments stay on pace, and the world’s best Android handset makers already releasing 5G phones, 5G will hit the ground running in 2020. In addition to bringing us all faster broadband speeds and more reliable mobile networks, the proliferation of 5G will also accelerate advancements in smart city, smart vehicle, smart manufacturing, and scores of IoT-intensive technologies hungry for 5G. In other words, the true value of 5G won’t be limited to phones. Just about every industry that touches our daily lives will be transformed – for the better – by the technology evolution that will define 2020.

A faster WiFi for a faster world: Although WiFi 6 and 5G are completely different technologies, both will be bringing us much faster processing and wireless connection speeds in 2020. 5G and WiFi 6 working in concert will create the perfect end-to-end combination of ultra-fast connectivity for home and office. Expect download speeds up to 3x faster than were achievable with WiFi 5, but that isn’t the best measure of the new standard’s value. The real value of WiFi 6 will be its ability to extend faster data speeds to far more devices than WiFi 5 was able to manage. This is important for two main reasons: the first is that the number of connected devices on the average WiFi network is expected to grow from roughly 10 now to 50 over the next few years, and that increase will require a faster, more efficient, and smarter WiFi capabilities. The second reason is that the quality and volume of data consumed through WiFi networks are both increasing as well, and WiFi 5 can’t handle the load all that well. WiFi 6 will eliminate these pain points beginning in 2020.

Analytics are the Competitive Advantage: Companies that still aren’t investing heavily in analytics by 2020 probably won’t be in business in 2021. There is simply far too much valuable customer data to be collected, processed and turned into insights for any company to remain competitive without making full use of modern analytics tools. Flying blind and following your gut are no longer viable options when every other business is leveraging sophisticated analytics tools to identify problems, opportunities, and solutions. That’s why we are seeing a consolidation of analytics capabilities across the tech world, from Salesforce acquiring Tableau, to Microsoft creating its own Power Platform. Every major tech company has already figured out that the future is in data—most specifically, the real-time processing of it – and so, regardless of what industry you’re in, analytics will again be one of the most dominant focal points of digital transformation in 2020.Bonus Insight: I see a continuation of acquisition, investment and growth for companies like Alteryx, Splunk, SAS and Qlik and Tibco, as the bigger platform players, just like Salesforce did with Tableau, are going to seek acquisitions, joint ventures and/or strategic partnerships.

New report reveals 97% of organizations are currently undertaking or planning to undertake digital transformation initiatives, but the vast majority say only a small proportion of their applications are integrated with each other.

A new report by application network provider MuleSoft has revealed a number of consistent difficulties experienced by global organizations as they undertake digital transformation initiatives.

The global study – which boasts more than 600 respondents across the US, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, and China – has found integration to be the key challenge. The vast majority of businesses say only a small proportion of their applications are integrated with each other, while demand on IT teams has grown well beyond budgets and capacity in many cases.

Customer experience continues to emerge as a key driver for digital transformation

The 2019 Connectivity benchmark report finds that 97% of organizations are currently undertaking or planning to undertake digital transformation initiatives.

While businesses are striving to increase their IT operating efficiency via digital transformation, customer experience is now the second most cited main goal for these initiatives.

Organizations are turning to digital tech – such as analytics – to fully understand their customers. The prevalence and accessibility of mobile and cloud technologies are helping businesses deliver a seamless experience across devices and channels. Furthermore, consumers are expecting efficiency across these channels – agile, real-time experiences which are consistent and satisfying.

Challenges

But integration of digital technologies across fast-growing organizations remains incredibly difficult. Data, apps and even entire teams can remain siloed.

The report finds that the average number of apps used in global organizations is around 900, but the percentage of those being integrated has stalled at just 29% (the same proportion as in 2018). IT infrastructure is frequently to blame for these integration issues.

IT teams are increasingly the key enabler to implement digital transformation within businesses, but the proportion of budgets they can devote to this has remained stagnant. These teams are often required to do more with less year on year.

This lack of integration has a knock-on effect. While 97% of IT leaders say they are currently undertaking or planning to undertake digital transformation initiatives, just 36% believe that they provide a completely connected user experience across all channels.

There is a clear disconnect here, and serious doubts as to whether digital transformation among global businesses is progressing as it should be. Nine in every 10 respondents agree that not successfully implementing digital initiatives will negatively impact revenues.

A look at where businesses are investing shows – in the first place – how customer-centric digital technologies are, while also highlighting how much demand is placed on IT teams.

Security, big data/analytics, IoT, and AI/machine learning are all being implemented by organizations to either protect or improve the experiences of the consumer. But each of these technologies add extra strain on IT teams.

59% of respondents report that their team finds it hard to introduce new technologies because of their legacy technology systems, while 65% report that it’s difficult to make changes to a particular system or application as a result.

Roadmap

The key strategy among global businesses in light of these digital transformation difficulties is to hire more talent. 52% are planning to do just this in 2019, while 44% plan to outsource projects to contractors.

is also increasingly being touted as a route to improve the efficiency of application production and deployment, with 50% of respondents working to make more of their organizational processes automated.

46% say they plan to reuse software components and 39% are looking to leverage APIs.

Takeaways

For nearly all global businesses, digital transformation is clearly a fundamental part of their business strategy in 2019. However, even those who have made great strides in implementing digital initiatives across their organizations are struggling to ensure new technologies are integrated with each other as well as existing applications.

The result is quite a worry for IT leaders. Many speak of data silos where apps are not well-connected – and even entire teams are operating in semi-isolation. A vast majority of respondents highlight that integration needs to be happening beyond the IT department across business analysts, marketing departments, sales teams etc. too.

The drive to improve customer experience in a multichannel, data-centric, agile business context is fantastic for consumers. But IT departments are seeing resources stretched as digital initiatives, such as those concerning security and analytics, increase in importance and investment. This doesn’t look good for staff wellbeing on these teams, and many expect revenues to be impacted negatively if initiatives are completed.

Consequently, there is no magic bullet for improving integration and completing transformation initiatives. More budget, staff and outsourcing of projects will undoubtedly improve capacity for IT teams. But businesses need to be looking at DevOps, reusable software assets, and enterprise-wide API strategies to improve processes and efficiency – and to ensure digital technologies can really fulfill their potential.

Digital transformation is one of the steps on the way to a business being able to adopt artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, augmented reality (AR) and other advanced technologies that provide it with a competitive advantage. It is also seen as necessary for survival.

According to two recent reports from Gartner, there are indications that digital transformation is a priority in 2019:

“Growth is the number one priority for CEOs, and many see digital business as the primary means of achieving its growth objectives. Only 33% of enterprises have managed to reach the scaling stage of digital business.” Getting to the Details of the Digital Platform: A Gartner Theme Insight Report, Bill Swanton, December 7, 2018

“Only 4% of organisations have no digital initiative at all, which signals a shift from digital as an option to digital as a mainstream platform.” Smarter with Gartner, CIO Agenda 2019: Digital Maturity Reaches a Tipping Point, October 16, 2018

Digital transformation is forcing organisations to look at IT from more perspectives than ever before, as an effective strategy spans many different, previously disconnected, technology disciplines and investments.

Leading organisations today are looking for complete sets of solutions to achieve greater speed and agility, supported by a high level of protection and an advanced analytics ecosystem, to balance managing the top and bottom lines without the added risk of starting from scratch.

Helping enterprises succeed with their digital transformation is a key opportunity for channel players.

Why digital transformation is hard

Digital transformation

According to Harvard Business Review writers, Thomas H. Davenport and George Westerman: “Digital transformation is an ongoing process of changing the way you do business. It requires foundational investments in skills, projects, infrastructure, and, often, in cleaning up IT systems. It requires mixing people, machines, and business processes, with all of the messiness that entails.”

In other words, a digital transformation project is a massive, complex project one that affects the whole of an organisation’s business, and needs to be approached with precision and a clear change management plan.

An enterprise will first look to its technology partners to understand the business outcomes of the planned transformation project, and then work closely with them to develop a solution that meets the technology needs in a holistic manner. Often a transformation project requires resources to be pulled together from many different sources. Only a channel partner is equipped to architect such a complete solution and needs to take their customer on a linear and carefully structured journey.

The components of a successful transformation

The more that an organisation can source its transformation technology from a single vendor, the simpler the overall process will be, as components will already be operating harmoniously with one another.

By combining industry-leading software and domain expertise in four core areas Micro Focus is now uniquely positioned to deliver on all critical aspects of enterprise digital transformation to help customers innovate faster with less risk.

Micro Focus has built solutions that target the four areas most critical to lasting digital transformation success:

1. Enterprise DevOps — Build and deliver better software faster
Winning the race to innovate requires a high-speed approach. Micro Focus solutions unleash the power of DevOps across the hybrid IT landscape, quickly bringing innovative ideas to life at the pace of business to securely deliver high quality software and services faster.

2. Hybrid IT management — Run and transform
IT Infrastructure, services and even purchasing models are rapidly evolving. Maximising business value and accelerating outcomes compels organisations to find new ways to extend existing investments and take advantage of new platforms – from containers to public clouds to Internet of Things (IoT). Micro Focus solutions help organisations run IT Ops at the speed of DevOps, delivering services on demand and generating operational and business insights, all while helping organisations address security, compliance and governance requirements.

3. Predictive analytics — Analyse in time to act
Data lakes are valuable only if the business can surface the insights hidden within its depths. Micro Focus helps leverage machine learning to transform unlimited volumes of data into accurate, actionable, automated insights at the speed of the business. Be in a position to make predictions and influence business outcomes quickly and efficiently with comprehensive and relevant real-time intelligence.

4. Security, risk, and governance — Secure what matters most
Cyber threats are escalating. Ageing apps and processes (along with new ones) are full of unforeseen risks. Privacy and compliance requirements are mounting. Micro Focus provides the industry’s broadest set of integrated security, risk, and governance solutions, with an analytics-driven approach to securing what matters most – identities, applications and data.

For the channel, the opportunity lies in taking customers on the transformation journey, providing consultancy and structuring hardware infrastructure to best leverage the software. Successful digital transformation needs the holistic oversight and cross-vendor capabilities of channel organisations. It’s for this reason that Micro Focus hired Lachlan Downing as NZ country manager – his specific remit is to support the local channel facilitating Micro Focus support and resources throughout the sales cycle.

In February this year, Micro Focus also announced the launch of its new, unified partner program, which includes access to all products across the Micro Focus portfolio on a global scale. In conjunction with the new program, a new partner portal was introduced that streamlines and simplifies the ways partners engage with Micro Focus and customers.

Lachlan Downing said, “This year Micro Focus New Zealand has transitioned to a channel-centric model and we have also fine-tuned our partner program, which will streamline access to marketing development funds (MDF) for Gold and Platinum partners and will help accelerate turnaround time for deal registration, quotes and orders as well as build skills and capability through full access to our training and certification content.

“The announcement of the new Micro Focus partner program and portal demonstrates our continued commitment to providing an easier path for our partners to confidently generate predictable revenue, build pipeline and do business with us.”

Todd Parsons, Channel Director – Australia and New Zealand, Micro Focus, said, “The new partner program and portal brings together the full Micro Focus product portfolio and allows full access from one system and program. Leading up to this we were still working with multiple partner programs and systems as we completed the acquisition of HP’s software business. The new program will allow greater efficiencies but also ensure our customers and partners can more effectively utilise our portfolio of solutions and products.”

Resellernew

“Industrial Revolution 4.0″ is taking place in many developed countries. It gives mankind the opportunity to change the face of the economy, but there are many unpredictable risks.

In the past few months, the concept of “Industrial Revolution 4.0″ has been widely talked about in the media and social networks. Along with that is the promise of “life changing” of businesses in Vietnam if our country can catch up the wave. Therefore, how should this revolution be understood?

Definition of Industrial Revolution 4.0

Industrial Revolution 4.0

According to Gartner, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (or the Fourth Industrial Revolution) comes from the “Industrie 4.0″ concept in a German government report in 2013. “Industrie 4.0″ connects embedded systems and intelligent manufacturing facilities to create digital convergence between the Industry, Business, functions and internal processes.

If the Gartner definition is confusing, Klaus Schwab, founder and president of the World Economic Forum, gives a simpler view of the Industrial Revolution 4.0:

“The first industrial revolution utilized water and steam power to mechanize production. The second revolution took place through the use of electricity for mass production. The third revolution uses electronics and information technology to automate production. Now, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is flourishing from the third revolution that combines technologies together, blurring the boundaries between physics, digital and biology. ”

According to Klaus Schwab, the breakthrough speed of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is “without precedent”. Compared to previous industrial revolutions, 4.0 is evolving under an exponential rather than linear speed. Moreover, it is breaking most of the industry in every country. And the breadth and depth of these changes signal the transformation of the entire production, management and administration system.

How will the Industry Revolution 4.0 work?

Followed by the definition of Klaus Schwab, the Industry Revolution 4.0 will take place on three main areas: Biotechnology, Digital and Physics.

The core elements of Digital in Industry Revolution 4.0 will be: AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data.

In the field of biotechnology, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 focuses on research to create leaps in agriculture, fisheries, medicine, food processing, environmental protection, renewable energy, chemistry and materials.

Finally, the field of physics with new robots, 3D printers, self-driving cars, new materials (graphene, skyrmions …) and nanotechnology.

Currently the Industry Revolution 4.0 is taking place in developed countries like USA, Europe and part of Asia. In addition to the new opportunities, the industrial revolution 4.0 also pose challenges for mankind to face.

Opportunities along with global risks and challenges

The downside of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is that it can cause inequality. Especially can break the labor market. When automation replaces manual labor in the economy, when robots replace people in many areas, millions of workers around the world may fall into unemployment, especially those who work in the field of insurance, real estate brokerage, financial consulting, transportation.

Machinery will push millions of workers into unemployment. Photo: Siemens.

The report of the World Economic Forum has raised this issue at different stages. The first stage will be the challenge for office workers, intellectuals, technical workers. The next stage will be cheap labor, which may be slower. With the movement of this revolution, in the next 15 years the world will have a new face, requiring businesses to change.

Then, the economic turmoil that has arisen from the Industrial Revolution will lead to life insecurity. Its implications will be political instability. If governments do not understand and fully prepare for the 4.0 industry wave, the risk of global instability is entirely possible.

In addition, changes in the way people communicate on the Internet put people at risk for financial health. Personal information, if not safely protected, can lead to undesirable consequences.

The 4th Industrial Revolution brings opportunity, and also challenges for humanity.
